Ram Setu Movie Review: A Hindutva Initiative Posing As a Scientific Endeavour, Average At Defending Reality

Ram Setu Movie Review

Director: Abhishek Sharma
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Satya Dev, Nassar, Nushratt Bharuccha, and Pravesh Rana.

Abstract of the movie 'Ram Setu':

In the movie 'Ram Setu', Akshay Kumar plays a seasoned archaeologist named Dr Aryan Kulshreshtha who is a non-believer and tasked with demonstrating the falsity of the Ram Setu, the bridge between India and Sri Lanka mentioned in Valmiki's Ramayana. He discovers that the structure might truly be man-made, indicating that Lord Ram might actually be historical after all. The movie follows Dr Aryan as he navigates difficulties to locate a lost trail while looking for Ravana's golden Lanka with the assistance of environmentalist Dr Sandra (Jacqueline Fernandez) and a native Sri Lankan guide, AP (Satya Dev).

Getting into the movie 'Ram Setu':

In this movie, Akshay Kumar is given a wonderful opportunity. His portrayal of Dr Aryan is unlike anything he has previously done. He needs to be persuaded to join the cause despite being an atheist. In comparison to many of his recent roles, he is conceptualised very differently, has a different appearance, and speaks differently. His more recent filmography has frequently come under fire for being largely made up of Public service announcements. He is given the chance to try something new by 'Ram Setu'.

Unfortunately, the girls in the movie aren't even allowed the freedom to act differently or at all. To explain her place on the "expedition," Jacqueline's persona is reduced to seeming attractive and using a few technical terms every 20 minutes or so. Even worse, Nushrrat Bharuccha barely contributes to the plot or the other characters because her character is limited to that of the screaming wife. After a rather impressive performance in Janhit Mein Jaari just a few months prior, it is disappointing for the actor.

Pravesh Rana, for us, is the film's unexpected package. He serves as the main adversary of the movie and works for Nassar who is a dishonest businessman. He does an excellent job with the part, adding just the right amount of charm and menace to what is essentially a filler character. Satya Dev is the movie's other standout character. Despite the fact that his character AP is written as a stereotypical Lankan with a clichéd accent, he conveys enough charm and levity in his delivery for the part to stand out. The actor appears to be having a terrific year with this and GodFather.

'Ram Setu' resembles a sleeper success from earlier this year called Karthikeya 2 in tone and tenor. This one is about Lord Ram, while the last one was about discovering Lord Krishna's historical veracity. Additionally comparable are the rhythm, action, and other characteristics. But the scale of the flicks varies. 'Ram Setu', with an estimated budget of 150 crores, exceeds the Telugu movie, which was reportedly filmed for 30 crores. However, it might be a good thing because 'Ram Setu' makes one think of a popular south Asian movie from this year.

Final verdict on 'Ram Setu':

With the help of mythology, Indian history, and societal commentary, 'Ram Setu' transforms this genre. As a result, viewers are treated to a thrilling trip that is both entertaining and predictable. 'Ram Setu', however, turns out to be an entertaining popcorn adventure if you get past the logical errors. But in the end, this is just another average Akshay Kumar movie among the many that Bollywood has been producing lately, for example; Cuttputlli, Raksha Bandhan, and now this.
