Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar Embraces His Superstardom Up Close and Personal

Selfiee Movie Review

Introduction:

As soon as you start watching Selfiee, the newest movie from Raj Mehta, you get a sense of deja vu. This comedic thriller, which stars Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, emphasises the poisonous bond that Indian performers, fans, and the media have. Selfiee is well-known to viewers of the recently released Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat blockbuster An Action Hero as well as those who have seen the original Malayalam version of the movie, Driving License (2022). In contrast to Avinash Iyer's darker and more sinister film, Raj Mehta's Selfiee maintains the plot lighthearted and straightforward in an effort to appeal to a wide audience.

Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi square off as Selfiee's main characters in a cerebral conflict. One portrays a continuation of himself, while the other stands in for the supporters who help an actor become a celebrity. Despite solid performances from the two actors, the end product falls short of expectations.

The Storyline of Selfiee Movie:

Akshay Kumar portrays the legendary Vijay Kumar, who is currently filming his upcoming movie in the central Indian city of Bhopal. He needs to get the producer's approval for a shoot during a vital scene, so he must have a valid driver's licence. Of course, Vijay doesn't possess one. To speed things up, the regional Road Transport Office (RTO) investigator Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is called. Aggarwal, who is a fan of the celebrity himself, offers to assist on the condition that he can take a selfie with the star and his son before giving the latter the coveted licence.

Vijay readily accepts to take part in the five-minute task, but things go wrong right before the deadline, resulting in an ego clash between the two men. And of course, the licence is nowhere to be found.

With a screenplay by Rishabh Sharma and a tale by the late Malayalam author Sachi, Selfiee gets off to a promising start and features Akshay Kumar in all his glory. One can tell that the filmmakers went to great lengths to make it the classic Akshay Kumar hit. The story is meta; Kumar is a well-known actor who values his supporters and admirers and does not want to offend them. Kumar is taking on the part of himself. Hashmi, on the other hand, portrays a small-town inspector who is content and happy in his work despite being aware of his limited abilities. The tale has a lot of potential on paper, but it falls short in practice.

The story of a common man's rigidity versus a superstar's influence could have been cleverly told on screen, but instead, the authors use the typical masala entertainer tropes. The end product is mediocre. By the time the picture reaches its climax, there has been a lot of melodrama added.

Cast Performance of The Selfiee Movie:

Akshay Kumar is a celebrity. In this comedic character, Vijay Kumar excels. The actor shows why he enjoys working with Raj Mehta the most and amuses the crowd with his comic timing. A welcome change from the recent drama-centric parts Akshay Kumar has played is this one.

As the cop who was once Akshay Kumar's biggest fan and is now his arch-enemy, Emraan Hashmi fails to stand out. Despite Emraan Hashmi's continuous attempts to dazzle the audience with his new persona, the actor falls short with his mediocre work.

Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharuccha barely have any significant roles in the movie, but Meghna Malik sticks out for her comic timing, particularly in the scenes with Akshay Kumar. Kusha Kapila, a popular figure on social media, has a unique cameo in the movie and shines.

Final Verdict on The Selfiee Movie:

Fair enough, Selfiee isn't as awful as some of Kumar's more recent productions. Avarage script is somewhat saved by Kumar's sincere performance, along with that of Hasmi and actor Mahesh Thakur, but the writing never completely realises the potential of a strong narrative, giving the impression of a half-hearted effort.

Diana Penty and Nusrat Bharucha, the two female actors in the movie, have restricted roles and screen time, and the songs are fairly average. Selfiee lacks the components that make for a typical Akshay Kumar paisa vasool movie, which may be due to audience fatigue with the actor's films in general or the fact that the filmmakers did not go above and beyond to showcase Kumar's ability.
