Sri Rama Navami is Lord Sri Ramachandra's auspicious appearance day. Sri Ramachandra emerged on the ninth day of the growing moon (Chaitra Masa, Shukla Paksha, Navami Tithi) in the month of Chaitra (March – April), and this day is commemorated as Sri Rama Navami every year.
Sri Ramachandra appeared as the son of Ayodhya's monarch, Dasharatha, who descended from the Maharaja Ikshvaku dynasty (also known as Raghu vamsha). Dasharatha married three times and had no children: Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. The king performed a Putra Kameshti Yajna on the advice of Maharishi Vashishtha. As a result, all three wives gave birth to sons. Rama was born to Kaushalya, while Bharata was born to Kaikeyi. Lakshmana and Shatrughna are twins born to Sumitra.
In the epic Ramayana, the great sage Valmiki describes Sri Rama's life and exploits in exquisite detail. In the ninth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Shukadeva Goswami narrates a condensed version of the Ramayana to Parikshit Maharaja (Bhagavata Purana).
